An Important Message from Mr. Needleman

Dear Melrose Families,

This is one of the hardest messages I’ve ever had to write. After over a decade as principal of Melrose, I have accepted a new position with LAUSD as Director of Pilot School Support. My last day as principal will be August 6th.

Serving this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life and career. Over the past decade, I’ve grown in ways I never imagined—as an educator, a leader, and a person—because of the deep relationships we’ve built together. I will always be grateful for your trust, your partnership, and the love you’ve shown me and this school.

Melrose is a special place. It is a vibrant, creative, and nurturing community that believes deeply in its children and their limitless potential. Even as I step into this new role, my heart will remain here—with the students, families, and staff who have meant so much to me.

Though I am moving on professionally, I will remain a part of this community as a Melrose parent and cheerleader. I am confident that the school is in strong and caring hands—with an extraordinary team of teachers and staff, and with the steady leadership of Ms. Miyaji, your dedicated magnet coordinator. I’ll be working closely with the school in the coming weeks to support a smooth transition, and all events scheduled before the start of school will go on as planned.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and the lives of your children. I carry all of you with me as I take this next step.

With heartfelt appreciation and warmest wishes,

May the force be with you,

Mathew Needleman
